On April 18th, Guangdong Province approved a major new initiative to rapidly strengthen its leading hospitals in a drive to reach top 2 in China’s ranking of provincial and municipal authorities with the best healthcare.
Two hospitals in Shenzhen have been selected to set the pace: Hong Kong University-Shenzhen Municipality Hospital and Shenzhen People’s Hospital. Along with five other hospitals elsewhere in Guangdong Province, they will share a total of 1.2 billion RMB (£134 million) in special funding as well as strong support from the provincial government and the City of Shenzhen.
The initiative is named ‘Dong Feng Ji Hua’ which means ‘plan to scale the highest mountain”.
At Shenzhen People’s Hospital, 10 departments have been selected to benefit from the funding, including its Endocrinology Department where the Shenzhen-Edinburgh International Diabetes Centre (IDC) project is based. According to Department Head Dr Jia Lijing, the professionalism of the Edinburgh team was instrumental in securing recognition and support.
With more funds flowing into the Department and the planned International Diabetes Centre, the goal is to establish the Shenzhen People’s Hospital IDC as one of China’s top 10 hospital departments within 3 to 5 years.
This is excellent news for Edinburgh International Investments and the University of Edinburgh which stand to generate more training and research opportunities as well as enjoy enhanced reputational benefit from close association with Shenzhen People’s Hospital.
